Through a Rotary District grant, The Rotary of Lee’s Summit, which meets at Unity Village at noon on Thursdays, is addressing literacy in Lee’s Summit.

The grant included two initiatives. One was providing 500 books for a reading outreach project at Great Beginning Early Education Center. This new program is designed to ensure every child born in Lee’s Summit receives a new book. The program will distribute “Read to Me.” The 500 new books arrived at Great Beginnings in late March. For more information on the program, contact Tracy Halphin, Parent Educator, or Kimberly Rues, Library Media Specialist, at Great Beginnings.

The second Rotary grant initiative was the installation of three Little Free Libraries in Lee’s Summit. Dave Eames and Ben Wine of Fossil Forge worked with the Rotary of Lee’s Summit to design the libraries, which will go up around the community in April.

Little Free Libraries are a little larger than a normal mailbox but contain books that anyone can take out and read. Rotary members will refill the libraries as needed.

The three locations for the libraries are Hillcrest Transitional Housing, Crossroads of Lee’s Summit, and Lea McKeighan Park - South. Ribbon cuttings are planned for 1:30 pm on the following Thursdays: April 8 (Hillcrest), April 15 (Crossroads) and April 22 (Lea McKeighan). Ribbon cuttings are open to the public.

“Going into our second year of placing a major emphasis on literacy, I am thrilled to see these three Little Free Libraries being placed in areas where families can easily access them. I think the commitment of our club to also keep them stocked with child and family friendly titles is one more demonstration of our commitment to literacy here in Lee's Summit.”
